Room 16 is a construction site!

It is week 5, and we are half way through Term 2!

A warm welcome to Rafaella, Oliver and Rosie who have joined us this term.

Meet our American friends!

Miss Lilly and Miss Kay visited our classroom!   They are teachers visiting our school from the United States of America.  We asked them lots of questions about America, and learned about America's national bird - the bald eagle! They read stories to us, and played in our classroom with us.

Using tools in our classroom as part of our play based learning:
We have been learning how to use a warm glue gun safely.  It is the lever's job that makes the warm glue come out.  We got very creative when making our Mother's Day cards!

The last few weeks we have been learning how to use a hammer and nails (wedges) and screws.  The children have been making their own creation - something that moves - using wood, nails, bottle top lids, warm glue gun, and screws.  We really enjoy having these tools in our classroom!

 Preston's cool car!

Stanley's skateboard.

Abel's car.

Iris's double decker bus.

Zain's monster truck, complete with springs to the wheels.

Rosie's trolley.

Criston's skateboard.

William's car.

Mr Cullen came and helped us fix our broken table.  He brought his drill with him, and let us use it to fix the table leg back onto the table.

We have been looking at screws and seeing how they work:

Radeesh

Sana made an electric house sculpture!

We have also pulled apart a computer processing unit (CPU) to see all the bits inside.  We undid lots of screws, took out the cooling fan, cut wires to see what was inside them.

Paea, Criston and Kendall working on the CPU unit.

The other day, we spotted a machine painting lines on our netball court - we all went outside for a closer look!   This machine has wheels and axles, levers, an inclined plane, and a pulley system for the paint to come out!  Amazing!

Bey Blade arena problem solving:
In Room 16 we love bey blades!  But there was not a big enough arena for people to play together at break times.  Room 16 made a plan, and five budding engineers built it from their plan.

Working out how to make a square shape with wood.

Stanley, Paea, Robert, Oliver and Zain in action!

Testing the new bey blade arena outside...

but realizing it works better on lino though!

It has been birthday season this month!  Usually we have popcorn afternoons on birthday days, however, we changed things up a bit and did some math science last Friday.  The Year 2's have been learning about 1/2 and 1/4 symbols.  Everyone had a turn at pouring in 1/4 of a cup of jelly liquid into a cup.  We used the electric jug, saw the lever click on, and then off, watched the crystals dissolve into the boiling water, stirred it, and poured it into cups - we then predicted how long it would take to set (4 hours!) in the staff room fridge.  We added sprinkles for a little extra fun!  Yum!

Criston creating magic!        Rosie smelling the packet - raspberry!

Sana, Zain and Tanushi carefully pouring in the jelly to message 1/4 of a cup.

Delicious! - off to the fridge to set.       Add sprinkles!

Sana and Criston - we are now 6!

Birthday time in Room 16 is super fun!

Room 6 and 16 all together
Room 6 is our buddy class - every Friday they come and help us with our ring words, and then we play together!  We love having them visit us!

Miss Teubes (Room 15 Teacher) brought her dog, Tia, into school for a visit!  Tia came and visited our classroom.  Mrs Taylor talked to us about safety around dogs, and how to behave appropriately so that we would not scare Tia.  We made her star of the day and she sat on our special chair!  She let us stroke her lovely soft fur.  Tia liked being wrapped up in a blankie!

Until next time, ka kite everyone!

Welcome back to Room 16!

It is the beginning of Term 2 and we have been focusing on what a good friend is, and how we can help each other.  The children have been working in various groups where we have been playing, helping, problem solving and learning to "think before we act".

From left clockwise: Abel, Rafaella, Mia-Leigh, Oliver and Rosie.
This group were working out how to use the iPad apps, with the help of Abel.

Creative play: Robert, Criston and Preston building their designs,
with Zain and Isaac (below) showing their creativity.

Anyone for Bingo?
We have been looking at number recognition through playing Bingo.  The students have been teaching our new students how to play this game, and what happens when someone wins! (they become the caller for the next game).

Radeesh, PJ (caller), Ramon and William.

Rafaella, Mia-Leigh, Rosie (Bingo!), Oliver and Abel (caller).

CUPS!  CUPS! and more CUPS!
We are mad about cup building.  It takes patience and team work to put a design together.  Take a look at these friendly creative models:

Radeesh and William               Riana, Sana and Tanushi

Abel and Oliver                    Liam, Paea, Zain and Isaac
Criston, Robert and Preston's team work design.
They then added dice, in colour sequence! (below)

Abel, Stanley, Criston and Preston - new design!

Dress up ladies, Tanushi, Rosie and Iris, in their make shift tent (house).

Robert, Preston and Criston designed a super tricky ball run.

Here was the tricky bit - lining it up precisely for the ball to drop (free fall)...
top shot Mrs Taylor!

Ramon, William, Radeesh and PJ building their ball run.

Autumn!

PJ, William and Paea painting leaves.

William is pressing the leaf gently (left), and peeling it off the paper (right) - a leaf print!

Abel

Leaf stamps!

Finished piece!  the students either painted, or rubbed a leaf to create this Autumn mural.

 Colouring in our leaf poem.

Term 2 Inquiry is:   FUNCTION
We are looking at how things work for our inquiry this term.  We will do this by looking at simple machines:  levers, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, inclined plane and pulley.  This week we looked at what function means, and talked about machines and all the parts they needed in order to work.  Each week we will be looking at a new simple machine: next week we will be looking at 'levers' (i.e.: toasters, scissors, catapults, see-saws, pegs, office chairs).

Taking the time to read!
We have extra reading time after lunch from our shared book box:

Sana, Riana, Stanley, Kendall and Iris are reading in the 'tent' !

Cool!

PB4L
(Positive Behaviour for Learning)
This week and next week Room 16 are focusing on Respect.
Our chart below is showing what we think is respectful behaviour.

Please, Thank you, Excuse me, Sorry.
Not to hurt people (hands and feet to ourselves).
Being kind to others - using kind words.
Playing together (no-one alone).
Helping others.

We are now 23 !

Fergus went on holiday with Mrs Taylor's family to Koh Samui (Thailand) and had a very relaxing time.

Fergus and the Thailand flag.

Ka kite for now!
