Room 16's camping experience!

On Wednesday this week we had no power in our classroom, for the whole day, due to the overnight storm.  We talked about surviving without power during the day and how we had no heat or warm water - it was like camping!

As part of our play-based learning I put together a provocation for children to learn about surviving without electricity.  On Thursday, we turned our classroom in a camping situation.  The children had a tent, learned how to build a camp fire, toasted 'marshmallows' on the camp fire, made food and cooked it on a camp cooker.  They also did their camp dishes in cold, soapy water!

Being in a tent was fun! we had a sleepover, read books to each other, told ghost stories - we even had a special 'night light'!

We learned how to build a camp fire, and we toasted marshmallows!  We used a torch, red and yellow cellophane and building wood to create out fire.

We were hungry and made camping food, and cooked it on our pretend gas cooker:
