Room 16's camping experience!

On Wednesday this week we had no power in our classroom, for the whole day, due to the overnight storm.  We talked about surviving without power during the day and how we had no heat or warm water - it was like camping!

As part of our play-based learning I put together a provocation for children to learn about surviving without electricity.  On Thursday, we turned our classroom in a camping situation.  The children had a tent, learned how to build a camp fire, toasted 'marshmallows' on the camp fire, made food and cooked it on a camp cooker.  They also did their camp dishes in cold, soapy water!

Being in a tent was fun! we had a sleepover, read books to each other, told ghost stories - we even had a special 'night light'!

Preston having a quiet read.

Tanushi, Iris, Criston, Kendall and Stanley in the tent.

Liam, Isaac, Paea and Preston having fun in the tent.

Sleepy boys!  William, Ramon, Abel and PJ having a rest!

We learned how to build a camp fire, and we toasted marshmallows!  We used a torch, red and yellow cellophane and building wood to create out fire.

PJ, Ramon, William and Abel built their camp fire and toasted marshmallows.

What a great camp fire!
Tanushi, Iris, Criston, Stanley and Kendall toasting their marshmallows.

Experimenting building other things with 'marshmallows' and skewer sticks.

Zane, Radeesh and Liam toasting marshmallows.

We were hungry and made camping food, and cooked it on our pretend gas cooker:

William, Abel and Ramon (at the cooker).

Ramon is doing a great job cooking.

Robert, Paea and Preston creating pizza and gingerbread men.

Isaac, Zain and Radeesh creating their camping food.

A delicious treat from Kendall!

Iris made this tempting plate of food.

Liam made a special gingerbread man with M and M's on top.

Paea made food for his group!

Stanley made a ghost plate!

Doing the dishes: we can't use a plate if it is not clean, we might become unwell...

Make your own sandwich time!

Greetings from Room 16!

A warm welcome to two new students who have joined Room 16 recently:

                              Abel Everson                                Liam Birss

Last week we planned to make our own sandwich, based on the shared book we had been reading - Max's Sandwich.  On Friday we put our planning into action!

Here are photo's of the children making their sandwiches:

Isaac's Mum (Michelle) helped butter the bread,
but we did all the rest ourselves.
